Shopping

Among an outstanding mix of buildings in the town, there are over 100 shops that provide day-to-day needs as well as the unusual and the highly specialised. Nearly all are independently owned, and in one way or another reflect the quality of the town.

Two shops in particular are ‘living museums’: an 18th century ironmongers with wooden floors, a multitude of antique and modern tools and instruments slung from the ceiling, old shelving and a traditional polished counter edged with a brass yardstick; and a former apothercary, now a cafe, with bow fronted windows and ancient drawers that once contained a myriad of potions. Don’t forget to take a look at Cox & Robinson’s pharmacy and The Crown in the Market Square. Both were film locations for the cult British movie “Withnail & I”.

The Market Square is also the location for Stony Stratford’s Farmers’ Market, held on the last Friday of every month between 9am – 1pm. Timor Court, just off the High Street, is the place to be for the weekly Saturday Market between 9am and 3pm. Here you will find household goods, clothes, gifts, bread, cakes, fish, plants, flowers and a fantastic stall for all your fruit and vegetables. Coronavirus update: Please note that the Timor Court Market is still operating every Saturday until 2pm.

Odell’s Yard opened in 2009 offering a lovely selection of independent small shops.

Don’t forget Stratford Arcade with other little shops and services tucked away and worth a visit.

Swinfen’s Yard is a unique mix of small, local independent shops, businesses and a café under a covered courtyard.
